Introduction: All about me!

My name is Sydney Newlin and I am a Senior majoring in Spanish/ Pre-nutrition.  I hope to graduate this spring and be accepted to a MA in Dietetics program that starts in the summer.  For a long time I didn't know what to major in, and I switched between a lot of different types of classes, but as soon as I decided on Nutrition and Spanish, I got to work.  Last summer, I took 14 credit hours of classes, 15 in the fall, 6 hours over intercession, and this semester I am going to be taking 17 credit hours.  Lately that hasn't left me much time for my hobbies, but I have a few of them that I enjoy!

I love collecting vintage class, doing all sorts of crafty stuff like making jewelry and painting or drawing, and I love to spend time with my family (which includes my two adorable dogs), my friends, and my boyfriend. I really like watching Netflix when I should be doing more productive things, and I just finished watching all of How I Met Your Mother.... and I actually liked the last episode even though I heard it was horrible to most people.  I like to play video games every once in a while but I rarely play campaigns and I even more rarely complete campaigns.  Black ops I and II Team Deathmatch and Zombies are pretty much what I stick to... and Yoshi and Sonic are pretty cool too.

Because of my interest in nutrition, I am trying to start learning how to cook healthy, and my goals for this semester include cooking myself dinner more often... because although fast food is delicious and easy, it is horrible for me.  (We will see how that goes... I'll probably be sleep deprived pretty quickly with my 8 am classes four days a week!).  I will probably have a really busy semester, but I am so excited to graduate so I can start reaching some more of my personal goals!  I hope this semester turns out to be easier than expected, and I will hopefully be working ahead in this class on a regular basis so I can finish early and focus on my other 14 credit hours.

  1. This sounds wonderful, Sydney! Maybe you will want to do a project for this class focused on foods from India; there are mythological foods, and also real foods too of course. You will see at the beginning of the Ramayana how the king is able to have sons by his three wives thanks to a divine rice pudding called kheer, for example. And kheer is also so yummy and good, not hard to make at all. Well, the earthly kind is easy to make: I don't know about the celestial kind, ha ha — more about kheer. Anyway, this all sounds good, and your blog looks fine (I assume you got the cookie thing figured out...?) — and I hope you will enjoy the class!

  2. Hi Sydney! Oh my gosh, that is a lot of classes! I've never had that crazy of a schedule but it really shows how dedicated you are! I've never watched How I Met Your Mother but I've heard good things! I really enjoy Netflix too (probably too much). I also like to play video games on the occasion! I really enjoyed MW3 multiplayer and I am currently playing Battlefield 1 and Modern Warfare Remastered when I have spare time. I can't believe you already have week 3 stuff done (I'm really jealous)! I am hoping to get a bunch of stuff done and get ahead soon!

  3. Hi Sydney! Nice to meet you. I hope you get into the program you want soon! You took so many classes in the last few months! How did you manage to keep going?! Kudos to you, girl! Your dogs are so adorable, by the way, what are their names? I used to like watching How I Met Your Mother but I haven’t finished it. I think a lot of people were disappointed with the ending but I had heard it and thought it was a fine ending too. Good luck on the rest of the semester and I look forward to reading your stories!

  4. Hi Sydney,

Wow, what a load of schoolwork that you have. Hang in there - it gets much easier as time goes on and totally worth all the blood, sweat and tears. What made you decide on nutrition? I have never seen the show "How I met your mother". Is it like a comedy? Is it fun to watch? What type of dogs are those?

  5. Hi Sydney,

That's awesome that you are studying nutrition. I personally wish I could have taken a nutrition class this semester. I think it is a really interesting topic. How I met your mother is a great show. I liked the last episode too, it was kind of weird but totally saw it coming. The Call of Duty part made me laugh. It is a fun game! But so frustrating sometimes. Nice to meet you, have a great semester!

  6. Hi Sydney,
My goodness lady, you have a lot of drive! Congratulations on managing all of those credits and classes! I hope you get some down time this semester. I am definitely guilty of indulging in Netflix when I should be doing more productive things, but sometimes you just need to decompress. FPS games are not my style because they give me a headache. However, my son says I am just too old! Give me a Yoshi game though and I can play for hours:) I am old school and that's good with me. Your dogs are adorable and look like they enjoy going for rides.
Great job on all the extra time you're putting into your classes! Graduation will be here before you know it. I look forward to reading your stories.

  7. Hi Sydney,
Looks like you are a very busy person. I hope you are closing the time gap for yourself to graduation. In regard to your words about food choice and trying to cook rather than just going for fast food, one quick and easy dish I like to cook is stir-fry. You just throw in some cooked chicken you picked up at walmart and a pre assembled bag of stir fry veggies out of the salad isle and buy a $30 Wok at the store. Throw in some butter or coconut oil and 10 minutes latter, Voila!!! Healthy balanced meal. Good luck on Grad School.

  8. Hi, Sydney! It’s nice to meet you! I just wanted to say that I’m in love with both of your dogs, especially the little one on the right in your picture!! Also, it seems super ambitious with the amount of hours you’re taking through the course of the year, but I’m glad you’re doing it! And I hope you make the best of all the education you’re going through. Good luck on the rest of the year!

  9. Hi Sydney!
Wow, I really was inspired by your ability to take on heavy course loads when you figured out what you wanted to do! That is awesome that you figured it out! I love eating healthy, and cooking for my sister and myself. It really feels good when you eat at home! Let me know if you ever want some healthy recipe ideas. I like looking at "Goodful" videos on Facebook. It's a spinoff from the Tasty videos but with healthy recipes. I wish you luck with the rest of the semester, and graduation! Nice to have met you!

  10. Hello it is nice to meet you.
I also love crafty things but I am not that good at it! I have yet to attempt to make jewelry, but that is a challenge I do not expect to take on till I have more time to really get into it. I tried to get into that show but I just could not. Have you seen The Office? That show is hilarious, even though it is rather cruel. I love the picture of you with the pups! They are so adorable. I really want to get either a dog or a cat this summer. I cannot believe you are taking an 8AM class! That is crazy. I could not. I can’t wait to read more of your stories and to get to know you better!

  11. Props to you Sydney for your intense schedule the past few semesters. It takes a lot of dedication to take so many hours!
I also agree with you on How I Met Your Mother. Throughout the show it always crossed my mind about them ending up together, so I am glad that it happened. But I do wish it was the mom, but Robin is great too! By the way, your dogs are so cute!
Good luck with the rest of the semester and happy early graduation!

  12. Sydney, that’s really cool that you’re studying Spanish and Nutrition. I understand having trouble figuring out to major in but I’m glad you found something you like! I am also an avid Netflix watcher myself and love How I Met Your Mother. I wasn’t thrilled with the ending but it didn’t think it was as bad as some other people did. Nice to meet you!

  13. Sydney, I think its awesome that you're doing Spanish and Nutrition. I would love to know how you got into Spanish and Nutrition. I have recently been on a health kick. I have been trying to drink a gallon of water a day and bring it with me to make sure I get enough! Also I like How I Met Your Mother a lot as well. I know a lot of people hated the ending so I honestly never watched it so I would not be disappointed and when I found what happened I was kind of bummed!

  15. Another Pre-Nutrition Major! It is exciting to meet another one of our majors in this online course. I was originally a music major but switched to HES and Pre Nutrition after I was diagnosed with Celiac disease after my prior diabetes diagnoses. That just helped me make steps towards a healthier me, and helping others live their lives better too.

  16. Hey Sydney, nice to meet you! Spanish and nutrition are very interesting choices but I hope you have found the things that will make you happy! It seems as if you have had quite the work load! That is crazy! Hopefully you will graduate and get into the program you want and then you will have time for your hobbies again! Best of luck!

  17. Congrats on being so close to graduation! I really admire the way you’ve buckled down and gotten so much done in such a small amount of time, and it looks like it’s definitely going to pay off. I’m definitely not a gamer, but my sister and I have grown up with a Super Nintendo System and play Mario every so often to relax, so I loved the Yoshi shout-out, haha. Also, your dogs look both really soft and pretty delightful. Good luck with the rest of the semester!

  18. Hey Sydney! What a unique double major, I dont think I have ever heard of that combination before. Does spanish play off well with nutrition? Those 14 hours of summer classes sound brutal. I was barely able to take two at one time so props for that! Zombies is by far one of my favorite games to play too, the new ones are so fun! Nice to meet you!

  19. Hey Sydney, it’s really nice to meet you! I think your double major is really interesting. I feel your pain with 8 am classes all semester. That’s rough, but you’ll be alright. I also love video games, but you’re right – finishing campaigns is tough, especially when you’re pressed for free time. I wish I had more time to spend on things like that, but I guess that’s what happens when you have lots of hours and plenty of homework to go with it. Oh well! Anyways, I can’t wait to read your stories.

  20. Hi Sydney! I am one episode away from being done with How I Met Your Mother. I think it’s a great show, but I prefer Friends. I feel like they are somewhat similar, but I enjoyed watching Friends more. I always thought being a nutritionist is so cool. Haha. I think it’s one of the most fulfilling professions because you are helping others live a healthier life. It’s nice to meet you!
